Science Fiction as the Mythology of the Future
This colorful and dynamic presentation explores how science fiction both plays out the themes and archetypes of ancient myth and acts as a stimulus for thinking about the far-ranging possibilities of the future. By exploring both ancient myth and science fiction – from its beginnings with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein through its current embodiment in film and the work of contemporary writers - audiences will gain a greater appreciation of the power and influence of science fiction in contemporary society.

Visions of the Ideal Human Society: Past, Present, and Future
Since long before Thomas More coined the word “utopia,” in 1516, people have been conceptualizing the ideal society. Employing a colorful and dynamic slide presentation, speakers Tom and Jeanne Lombardo provide an in-depth historical examination of utopian visions over 3000 years. From Plato in ancient Greece and Thomas More at the beginning of the modern era, through William Morris, Marx and B.F. Skinner in the nineteenth and twentieth century, to more recent utopian experiments such as the Hippies and the New Age Movement, utopian visions have inspired both political change and actual experimental communities. Audiences will learn about the elements of utopian thought and gain an understanding of the social value of utopian thinking.
