Opened
March 8 and closed April 5 at the Colorado Mountain College Gallery
located at 831 Grand Avenue, Glenwood Springs.
There
was an exhibit opening and reception on March 11, 6:30 p.m. at the Colorado
Mountain College District Office Gallery, 831 Grand Ave. At the
reception there was a brief presentations by the Colorado River Water
Conservation District, Roaring Forks Conservancy, and River Water (a
high school conservation group) Each group gave a presentation
of their work on behalf of the rivers and the issues they currently
faced. This was followed by a discussion with high school students
and the community at large.
The
River We Know
On
March 30, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Gary Zabel, Professor of Geology at
Colorado Mountain College lead a walking tour of Glenwood Canyon, Hanging
Lake and No Name. His discussion was on the geology of the Colorado
River, riverine ecology, and local lore about the river.
Reading
the River
Richard
Fleck lead three discussions at the Glenwood Springs Public Library
based on the readings from his book, A Colorado River Reader.
Discussions were held on March 13, 20 and 27 at 6 - 8 p.m..
Water
Wars
(Law of the River)
A
panel discussion entitled "Colorado River Water Rights" was
held on April 3, from 12-1:30 p.m., at the Colorado Mountain District
Office Conference Room (831 Grant Ave.). Panelist were Jim Lockhead,
Greg Hall, and Ron Hoffarth Kuhn, all Glenwood Springs area attorneys.

Six,
30-minute programs were aired at 12:00 noon beginning on March 8 and
continuing on March 15, 22, 29, April 5, and the 12.
KAJX-FM
(Aspen) Six, 30-minute programs were aired at 12:30 p.m. beginning Feb.
21 and on: March 7, 14, 21, 28, and April 4.

Exhibit
The
exhibit opened on April 12 and runs through May.
There
was an exhibit opening reception on April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Whitman
Education Center, Museum of Western Colorado located at 4th
and Ute Avenue. Giving the opening addresses were Steven Schulte,
Professor of History at Mesa State College, and Monte Pascoe, one of
the most respected water attorneys in Colorado. Audience members
then went to the exhibit premiere at the neighboring History Museum.
The
River We Know
On
April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dave Fishell lead a tour of the Colorado
River and associated water sites.
May
7, 8, and 9 was Re-Enactors Day in Grand Junction. School children
from various Western Slope schools took guided tours of the traveling
exhibit on those days.
On
May 16, during Historic Preservation Week, a panel of water experts
discussed the Colorado River Compact in the Federal Court House where
some of the 1922 Colorado River Water Compact discussions were held.
On
April 14 at 2 p.m., Dr. Steven Schulte, Professor of History at Mesa
State College, talked about his d book, Wayne Aspinall and the Shaping
of the American West at the Whitman Education Center, Museum
of Western Colorado.
Reading
the River
April
13 and May 4 were two reading discussions by Richard Fleck, editor of
The River We Know. On April 13, Fleck presented a narrated slide
presentation on the Colorado River. He returned on May 4 to lead
a discussion of the various essays featured in his anthology.
Both sessions were held at 10 a.m. in the Whitman Education Center,
which adjoins the Museum of Western Colorado. The museum is located
at 4th and Ute Avenue.
Moving
Waters Radio Documentary
The
Moving Waters Radio Documentary aired on KAFM 88.1FM Community Radio
in Grand Junction. The program aired on the following dates:

3/25/02, 4/1/02, 4/8/02, 4/15/02 and 4/25/02

The Colorado
Endowment for the Humanities announced The West of John Wesley
Powell, a summer teacher institute. The Institute was held at Mesa
State College in Grand Junction, Colorado from June 24-28, 2002.
This five-day Institute was especially developed for K-12 teachers,
specifically those with an interest in the Colorado River, geology,
Native
American ethnology and linguistics, and western water history.
A limited number of space were reserved for non-teachers.
The Institute was directed by Clay S. Jenkinson, one of the nation's
leading public humanities scholars, also known for his first-person
characterizations of Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis.
The Institute covered the following themes:
-The life and achievements of John Wesley Powell
-The geology of the American West
-Powell's reform agenda for land and water development in the West
-Mapping the West: John Wesley Powell and the US Geological Survey
-Powell's pioneering work on Native American linguistics
-Powell and Indian ethnology and American Indian policy
-The 1869 running of the Colorado River
-Western water law

three recertification and/or three graduate credits. For
