Winifred J. Bundy

2009 Juliana Yoder Friend of the Humanities Award Recipient

In 1974, at the age of 59, Winifred Bundy opened the Singing Wind Bookshop in her home on a working cattle ranch in Benson, AZ. The bookstore specializes in literature of the Southwest but also has a significant collection of works on art, architecture, natural history, and Native America literature.

Winifred further cultivates the love of literature and the humanities through the many activities she hosts at the bookshop including educational programs for school children, book discussions, and author readings. The Bookshop has become a destination for tour buses and highlighted in numerous travel guides, Time Magazine, Arizona Highways, The New York Times and many Arizona newspapers. A visit to Singing Wind Bookshop may be one of the most unique book buying experiences of your life.

In addition, to managing her book shop Winifred is a long time supporter of the University of Arizona Poetry Center. She serves on the College's Advisory Committee and oversaw several very successful fundraisers to build a permanent home for one of the nation's largest collections of contemporary poetry.
