Project Grants Funded June 2010

Center for Desert Archaeology, TUCSON. Extending the Research of Archaeology Café. AHC funds will support the Center's "Archaeological Cafe," a free discussion and lecture series exploring the latest in archaeological research in the Southwest. A video of each presentation will also be made available through the Center's Web site. Project Director: Catherine Gann, 520/882-6946. Total grant award: $3,640.

Kore Press, TUCSON. Coming in Hot: The Civil Discourse Tour. AHC funds will support a series of free performance and discussion programs in September 2010 exploring the experience of women serving in the military. The performance component of the project, "Coming in Hot," is based on Kore Press's publication of the AHC-funded anthology titled, "Powder: Writing by Women in the Ranks, from Vietnam to Iraq." Museum of Northern Arizona, FLAGSTAFF. "Humanities Insights" Programming at the Annual Hopi and Navajo Festivals of Arts and Culture. AHC funds will support humanities-based programming at the 77th Annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture and the 61st Annual Navajo at the Museum of Northern Arizona in May 2010. Project Director: Anne Doyle, 928/774-5213. Total grant award: $5,000.

Western Literature Association, FLAGSTAFF. Voices from the Literary West. AHC funds will support a series of three panel discussions at the Western Literature Association's annual conference, "Voices from the Literary West," in October 2010. The panel discussions, which will be offered free to the general public, explore the roles of fiction, song, gender and identity in the American west, and will include authors such as Dagoberto Gilb, Ron Carlson, Laura Tohe and Sherwin Bitsui. Arizona State University, New College of Humanities, Arts, and Culture, PHOENIX. New Approaches to Trauma: Bridging Theory and Practice. AHC funds will support "Approaches to Trauma: Bridging Theory and Practice," a highly unique, interdisciplinary conference exploring recent scholarship in trauma studies linking theory with clinical practice. The conference, which will be free and open to the public, will feature a diverse set of keynote speakers alongside thematic sessions. Project Director: Monica Casper, 602/543-6024. Total grant award: $5,000.

Pan Left Productions, TUCSON. Arizona LGBT Storytelling Project. AHC funds will support the development of web content for the collection and interpretation of oral histories in the LGBT community in Arizona. Project Director: Jaime A. Lee, 520/901-0379. Total grant award: $1,000.

Northern Arizona University, Department of Anthropology. FLAGSTAFF. Footprints of the Ancestors: Hopi Youth Exhibit. AHC funds will support the development of an exhibit exploring the experience of Hopi youth titled, "Footprints of the Ancestors." The exhibit, which will also include public presentations and school group tours, will be hosted by the Museum of Northern Arizona, and will open in conjunction with the Museum's annual Hopi Festival in July 2010. Project Director: George Gumerman, 928/523-3498. Total grant award: $10,000.

Arizona Jewish Historical Society. PHOENIX. Arizona Jewish Centennial Project. AHC funds will support the development of an exhibit at the restored Cutler Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, exploring the history of Jewish residents in Arizona in the Spring of 2011. Project Director: Lawrence Bell, 602/241-7870. Total grant award: $5,000.

Tucson Botanical Garden. TUCSON. ElderLink: Heritage Crafts and Hispanic Families in Tucson. AHC funds will support the collection of oral histories on the local Hispanic home crafting traditions that will result in an exhibit open July 2010 at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Project Director: Juliet Niehaus, 520/326-9686. Total grant award: $5,000.

Midtown Museum District Neighborhood Association, PHOENIX. Midtown Neighborhood History Project. AHC funds will support the collection oral histories and public programs that preserve and share the history of the formative years of Phoenix's Midtown district. Project Director, Margaret Dietrich, 602/758-3129. Total grant award: $3,030.

Tempe History Museum, TEMPE. Tempe African American History Booklet. AHC funds will support the development and printing of a booklet featuring a collection of oral histories from early African American residents in Tempe. The Museum will also conduct public programs exploring African American life in Tempe at Desert Vista High School, Tempe, in February 2012. Project Director: Amy Douglas, 480/350-5100. Total grant award: $4,985.

Tucson Meet Yourself, TUCSON. Key Ingredients Pavilion. AHC funds will support a "Key Ingredients" Pavilion at the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival in October 2010, highlighting the launch of AHC's Key Ingredients: American by Food, a Smithsonian traveling exhibit The exhibit will open at Topawa in October and tour at rural sites in Arizona through August 2011. The Pavilion will feature free humanities programming exploring Arizona's diverse regional cooking and eating traditions. Project Director: Mia Hansen, 520/370-0588. Total grant award: $10,000.
