AHC’s History with the
Museum on Main Street Program
The Arizona Humanities Council has had a long and successful history with the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program. Produce For Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-1945, was the first MoMS exhibition to tour Arizona in 1996. Reaching over 23,000 visitors, the exhibition was hosted by the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, the Jerome Historical Society, the Northern Gila County Historical Society in Payson and the Parker Public Library.
The exhibition Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future toured for two years, 2003 and 2004, visiting twelve sites including the Produce for Victory communities along with the Casa Grande Valley Historical Society, the Cave Creek Museum, the Challenger Learning Center in Peoria, the City of Williams, the Cosanti Foundation in Mayer, the Friends of the 1904 Courthouse in Nogales, the Gila Valley Arts Council in Safford, Mohave Community College in Lake Havasu City, the Town of Payson, and the Town of Prescott Valley. The exhibition and supplemental programs reached over 287,000 visitors.
Between Fences toured Arizona in 2007-2008, and an extensive project archive is available here. The most recent MoMS exhibition to come to Arizona reached over 23,000 visitors at the Gila County Historical Society in Globe, the International Sonoran Desert Alliance at the Curley School in Ajo, the Pimeria Alta Historical Society in Nogales, the Tohono O'odham Nation Cultural Center & Museum in Topawa, the Verde Historical Society/Clemenceau Heritage Museum in Cottonwood, and the Winslow Historical Society at the SNOWDRIFT Art Space.
AHC is anticipating the arrival of Key Ingredients: America by Food in 2010 and Journey Stories in 2012, Arizona’s Centennial year. Key Ingredients applications are being accepted now for the June 15, 2009, deadline.
